What is Gout ? and Gout Medications Gout Pain : Some Lifestyle Causes
Gout is a type of arthritis that causes severe
attacks of joint pain and swelling (often in the toe,
but also in other parts of the body. The pain and
swelling of gout is caused by uric acid crystals
building up in the joint which causes inflammation.
Uric acid usually dissolves in the blood and is
flushed out by the kidneys. If there is too much
uric acid in the blood (hyperuricemia) or if the
kidneys cannot remove it quickly enough, crystals
form that collect in the joints, kidneys, skin and other soft tissues.
Gout is more common in men than in women.

The consequences of the build up of uric acid,
include acute and chronic gouty arthritis, kidney
stones, and local deposits of uric acid (tophi).
Gouty arthritis is is said to be the most common
cause of inflammatory arthritis in men over 40.

Diet: Foods containing compounds called purines
increase the production of uric acid in the body.
Some plants also increase uric acid, so vegetarians
can be stricken with gout, too.

Life Style and Diet Changes
Eat a low fat, moderate-protein diet, based around
vegetables, fruits, legumes and grains. Plus, the
most important dietary consideration is the proper
type and amount of fat. For example, cold-water
fish and flaxseed are rich in omega-3 fatty acids,
which promote a healthy inflammatory response.
Most other types of fat promote inflammation.
The worst being processed oils, saturated fats and
hydrogenated oils (peanut butter and margarine).
Reduce or avoid foods that are high in purines,
including shellfish and red meats. Also these vegetables can increase uric acid levels:
peas, beans, spinach, and lentils.
Avoid fructose, such as in corn syrup.

Restrict intake of alcohol.
Avoid: dehydrating drinks such as alcohol
(beer, wine, spirits.), coffee, tea, and cocoa.
